The zoo in the village of Burabay was founded in 1976 as a “Home for Rescued Animals.” It was opened as a hunting lodge, where wounded animals and birds were brought. This tradition has survived to this day. Now the resort's zoo is open all year round. 30 species of animals and birds live there even in winter.

Nowadays, the zoo has 59 inhabitants including 10 different species of birds, 2 of them are listed in the National Red Book, such as the Golden Eagle and Imperial Eagle . There are predatory birds (golden eagle, imperial eagle) as well as peaceful ones(peacock, guinea fowl, pheasant, chickens, turkeys, domestic and Muscat ducks and swans) among them.

In winter, heat-loving animals are placed into special indoor enclosures ( called " Zimnik") , and they are taken out to outdoor enclosures and ponds in May. During the cold period, the wards are fed more often than usual and their diet consists of crushed barley, chopped vegetables and minced meat or fish. Food waste products , fish oil, shellfish and vitamin supplements are given to them too.

The rescued birds are under the strict supervision of a vet, they usually recover and undergo rehabilitation. After getting stronger , zoo workers set them free in spring. For example, in May 2023, after 6 months of rehabilitation, a swan and a pelican were set free.

The Zoo of the Burabay resort is run by the Burabay Damu LLP of the President's Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

It should be noted that the entire territory of the Burabay State National Park is home to 197 species of birds, 14 of which are listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan.

The Zoo is open from 10:00 to 18:00, seven days a week. It's free for children under five.
